As I understand it no: 1 & 2 Parkside Cottages were built by Jessie Wheatley ( Wheatley & Sons Builders ) and according to the paperwork I have here were in Beauchamp Rd. In 1911 presumably Alice (nee Frost) was by then the widow of Edward Wheatley, therefore head of house. The cottages were built as a pair of semi detached houses. "So they would have occupied just one half of the site. It must have pretty cramped in there with that lot. At that time Alice Louise according to her marriage & death certificates Louise was 30. She did not marry Earnest George Burton until she was 39 on 12th August 1919. Ernest was a bachelor, a joiner by trade and he lived at 2 Parkside cottages. I don't know if she moved next door or he moved in with them. At what point the shop opened, I don't know. Presumably the entrance was in Nightingale Road as all later documents show. Where was the shop, in the house or an outbuilding again I don't know. When did all the other residents leave again that is unclear but Alice, widow of Edward, died 14th Feb 1919 address Beauchamp Rd. So maybe that was when the shop opened after her mother's death. To the best of my knowledge Earnest didn't work in the shop but continued his trade. At what point did the entire top floor of Parkside cottages become the flat we knew again, I don't think we will know. Rosemarie |
